Visalia Farmer’s Market & Perseid Meteor Shower Update

I want to thank Pete Cowper, Marvin Demmers, Mike Lopez & Jose Saenz for coming out on short notice to help me with the Farmer’s Market booth. We joined the National Park Service to help them promote their “Dark Sky Festival”. Jose went to the festival August 6th and reported that it was a big success.

On Thursday evening Aug 11th, the APO (Arthur Pursell Observatory) Was open for members to come and enjoy time together sharing stories and looking for meteors from the Perseid Meteor Shower. In attendance were, Mike Blase and his three year old daughter Evie, New member Steve Cantrell, Pete Cowper, Aaron Hubbard, 1st timer Jacinto Guardia, Jose Saenz, Reese Williford, and myself Greg Eckes,

Mike Blase brought out a blow-up couch and his guitar. Steve Cantrell brought his brand new Celestron NexStar 8SE scope. We spent time with him setting it up his new scope. We looked at quite a few objects, Saturn was especially nice. We saw some really nice meteors. They tended to come in groups of two or three. The were usually slow moving and appeared to be low in the atmosphere. Most of them were fairly bright with red heads followed by a blue tail and would leave a trail in the sky.I left at 2:30 AM and we had counted about 75 meteors. As usual, Mike Blase closed the place at 3:45 AM. He said that the count was up to 104. That averages out to about 13 meteors an hour.

I think that everyone had a good time. I know that I did. I especially enjoyed meeting Steve and Jacinto.
