Astronomy Class

This class is free for Members of the TAA. “Non- member” registration is $40.00 payable at the first meeting or online as membership dues.

This class will be presented on six wednesday nights.  Jan 22, 29, Feb 12,19, 26, Mar 12.

This class is intended to teach the basics of astronomy. Each class will have two parts. The inside presentation and the outside viewing of the constellations, stars, moon and planets. Each person should have there own red-light flashlight and a planisphere. The Planisphere may be purchased from us for $10.00 at the meeting.

Among the topics to be covered are:

  • Life and death of stars
  • What is  light and how astronomers use it.
  • Astronomical time and distance
  • Our Solar System
  • Galaxies and Black Holes
  • Constellations & Asterisms

Skills to be taught;

  • Star identification
  • How to use a planisphere
  • Constellations and how to locate them
  • Star identification
  • How to read star charts
  • How to use a telescope and Binoculars
  • How to prepare for a night of observing

*Note that the class will still be presented even if it is cloudy or raining.
