Back in October of 2014, Matthew Schoenau contacted the TAA to see if he could upgrade our old wooden platform to our telescope dome, for his Eagle Scout Project. The existing platform has been replaced at least three times since 1967. Each time it was replaced with wood. Over time the deck boards warped causing the nails to pull up creating a safety hazard. The posts and stringers supporting the deck were rotted, making the deck unsafe. The attached pictures don’t accurately show how bad the deck was.
To solve this problem, Matthew suggested that the deck be rebuilt using steal for the posts, and expanded metal for the deck. He drew up plans for the project and took pictures of the old deck to show its deteriorated condition. The project also included taking out the metal stairs and railing, stripping off the old paint and repainting them. The metal stairs were part of a previous Eagle Scout project done in 1997. The Boy Scout leaders accepted his proposal and work began on March 7, 2015.
The new platform, painted stairs and railing were installed on May 24, 2015. The project is completed and looks great! It is very strong and will probably last a thousand years.
Thank you Matthew for all your hard work. The TAA could have never afforded to do this project without you and your fellow scouts from Troop 251.
